CDC: Clinicians Should Use WHO Growth Charts for Children Under 2 Years
The CDC is recommending that clinicians use the World Health Organization’s 2006 standards — instead of the CDC’s own growth charts — to assess growth in children younger than 24 months, according to recommendations published in MMWR. Growth of children aged 2 to 19 years may still be evaluated with the CDC’s charts.
The switch is recommended because WHO growth charts establish growth of the breast-fed infant as the norm. With the WHO’s standards, abnormal growth should be characterized using the 2.3rd and 97.7th percentiles, instead of the 5th and 95th percentiles.
